“Bring international air connectivity to Madurai”

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has requested the Governor K. Rosaiah to impress upon the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to introduce international flights from Madurai by Air India Express.
Other international airline companies should also be urged to introduce flights connecting Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and other Gulf destinations.
A chamber delegation led by president N. Jegatheesan and senior president S. Rethinavelu met the Governor during his visit to the city on Saturday and submitted a memorandum pressing various demands.
In its memorandum, the chamber pointed out that the southern districts, besides having abundant tourist destinations that would attract foreigners, was also home to a large number of Tamilians now working in Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, besides the Gulf countries.
Further, once the Nanguneri Special Economic Zone and the various Tidel Parks in Madurai and Tiruneveli take off, the region would see a lot of foreign collaborations. Bringing international connectivity would expedite the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI).
The chamber also pointed out the a Rs. 130 crore terminal was inaugurated last year at Madurai Airport, which had also been declared as Custom Airport with immigration counters already having established and awaiting deployment of personnel by the Union Home Ministry.
