Dabolim airport panel to tackle bird-hits at next meet

Vasco: Thursday's bird hit incident which saw the cancellation of a charter flight, has brought into focus the risk involved in flying from the Dabolim airport, which has its surroundings littered with garbage.
Sources said that for more than a year now, incidents of bird proliferation have increased - posing a danger to life and property.
Despite efforts by the municipality and panchayats, garbage thrown on the roadside and unclean surroundings continue to attract birds and their numbers are on the rise. Over the years, their population has increased in areas such as Shantinagar and Gandhinagar.
Raul da Costa, former Chicalim sarpanch, said that the panchayat is making all efforts to keep the area under its jurisdiction clean, but reckless dumping of solid waste by the roadside has created the problem.
