IMD may make way to park more aircraft

Ahmedabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Ahmedabad may soon get a new address.
The weather department's existing campus at Ahmedabad airport will make space to park planes. In a bid to overhaul the aircraft parking capacity at city airport, Airport Authority of India (AAI) has recently written to the IMD to shift to a new campus for creating an apron area on the vacated space.
AAI has offered the department a plot near the Torrent power station in the airport campus.
"Currently, Ahmedabad airport's apron can accommodate around 30 aircrafts of different sizes. But, there is a need to increase the parking capacity and we want to extend the current apron area till the international terminal, which is possible only if the IMD's radar and office is shifted," said N K Shukla, general manager, AAI.
The need for extra space for parking stems from the increasing number of flights from Ahmedabad as well as diversions from Mumbai and Delhi. Routine operations of the airport are affected whenever there are flight diversions from Mumbai and Delhi.
