Denied pay, AI cabin crew bunk work

New Delhi: If your airline does not pay salary for months, it makes more than just emotional sense to take leave from work to visit your brother on Bhai Dooj and get the customary gift or money.
That's what a large number of Air India airhostesses reportedly did this Bhai Dooj, which was on October 28, a Friday, said a senior airline official. The cabin crew shortage, as a result, got so bad that only 17% of Air India's flights that day left on time.
In fact the problem of cabin crew reporting sick, even as AI faces a serious crew shortage, has become acute on the long festive weekends in October and November. During the Diwali period, AI's on time performance (OTP) ranged from 18 to 25%. On a recent three-day weekend, the OTP was 47%. This despite the fact that in weeks before that OTP had crossed 80% thanks to a series of measures by the airline. Even on Wednesday a number of flights were delayed due to cabin crew shortage.
The problem has got so severe that AI's top brass called a meeting on the issue on Tuesday evening.
