New Delhi: Light fog on Saturday morning saw visibility reduce to 400m between 6.30 am and 9 am. Low visibility procedures had to be initiated at the IGI Airport and Category-I level operations were on for a few hours. Met officials say that some respite from the persistent haze of the past few days and Saturday's fog can be expected from Sunday evening as a light wind has picked up.
"The wind has been extremely calm for the past few days because of which pollutants have not been getting dispersed. The second factor that affected formation of haze and fog was the inversion factor. Surface level air, if it is cooler than air in the upper levels, will not rise and again pollutants get trapped in a limited space," said RK Jenamani, director in-charge, IGI Met.
On Friday, air near the surface was 17 degrees Celsius while air 300 m above that was 23 degrees. On Saturday the difference reduced significantly with surface air at 17 degrees Celsius and air 300 m above that was 19.8 degrees Celsius. Wind in the afternoon was also 10-12 km/hr. We are not expecting any rain for another week so chances of fog are low," Jenamani added.
The western disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir is now moving eastwards although another one is expected around November 8. This will not bring rain to the plains as it will be more towards the hills. Jenamani added that the plains would continue to witness intermittent hazy days till at least November 20.
