Air crash victims' families continue to fight for compensation

As another round of negotiations begin with the insurance company, families of the victims of Mangalore air crash appear to be rather angry and many of them simply were tired of bargaining.
The lawyer firm hired by Air India called Mulla and Mulla on Monday and began yet another round of hearing for the victims families' to settle insurance claims. However, some relatives of the 158 people who died in the crash on May 22, 2010, appeared to be both tired and angry at being made to go through such negotiations.
Many of them feel that they were not given their due according to the Montreal Convention. Abbonnu Maddadka, who lost his sister and her three daughters, told The Hindu that he and his brother-in-law had been waiting the whole day to speak to lawyers.
“If even one part of that plane had fallen in Kerala, they (the Kerala Government) would not have let them (the law firm and airline) behave this way with us,” said Mr. Maddadka, a resident of Maddadka in Belthangady taluk.
According to Vittal Puthran of the Legal Department of Air India, over 70 claims had been settled by the airline.
