Patna: The Bihar assembly today passed a resolution for renaming Gaya international airport as Bhagwan Buddha international airport to mark the 2600th year of attainment of enlightenment by Lord Buddha.
The members passed the resolution unanimously by a voice vote after Speaker Mr Uday Narayan Chaudhary put the motion for voting in the assembly.
Chief Minister Mr Nitish Kumar introduced the resolution in the state assembly in the post-lunch session.
The re-naming will boost religious tourism at Gaya which has the world-famous Mahabodhi temple and Mahabodhi tree which are reverred by Buddhists, Mr Kumar said.
The Chief Minister hoped that re-naming will put the airport on the world map and boost the tourism industry, particularly among Buddhist pilgrims.
