New Delhi: The moderate fog that enveloped the city on Friday affected airline schedules at the IGI Airport. Major delays, however, occurred in sectors that saw dense fog from midnight of December 9 to Friday morning, including cities like Lucknow, Allahabad, Amritsar, Patna, Varanasi and Gorakhpur.
Airport sources said only the main runway 28/10 was being used for arrivals since the new runway 29/11 was reporting CAT-II level fog with runway visual range (RVR) of 400m.
"Most arriving aircraft were equipped to land in a minimum visibility of 500-550m and hence could not use the new runway where visibility was much lower. For almost two hours, most of the arrivals were on the main runway because of which we saw a little congestion. Met had already predicted fog so we were surprised to learn that airlines were so ill-prepared," said an official.
