Carbon Emission: DGCA brings out new guidelines

Bangalore: In an attempt to get the aviation industry to ‘introspect’ and assess their own carbon emission footprint, the Aviation Environment Circular (1 of 2012) by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has brought out guidelines which would help them prepare a strategy in order to comply with relevant regulations and policies without adversely affecting their growth.
Airport operators and airlines will have to submit all prescribed data to the DGCA at by January 31, 2013.
The sum of these carbon footprints will also help develop National Carbon Inventory for the civil aviation sector, it stated. The circular adds that while the aviation’s contribution to greenhouse gases emission remains relatively small, in the order of 2-3 per cent, but the same was set to increase.
The provisions of the circular shall be applicable to airports having annual aircraft movements more than 10,000. They have given a time line for the same and stated that the organisations shall compile the relevant data for carbon inventory for the complete calendar year from January to December.
