Now, emissions on DGCA radar

Mumbai: The growing concern on carbon emissions and global warming has trickled down to the civil aviation sector in India too.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has decided to create a national carbon inventory for the civil aviation sector and collect data on carbon emissions from various airports and airlines.
In a recent circular, the DGCA has also asked airlines and airports to measure and monitor emissions from various aviation sources like aircraft engines, support power units and vehicles. The data will be submitted annually to the DGCA.
Airlines and airports will have to assess their own carbon footprint for a complete calendar year and submit a report under a prescribed format to the DGCA. "The aviation industry contributes 2 to 3% of global emission of greenhouse gases. However, it is likely to increase as the sector continues to grow rapidly," the circular stated.
Authorities have divided the emissions into aviation (which includes release from the aircraft) and airport (includes discharge from ground support equipment, power generation sources and ground transport).
The circular further states that all airports having an annual aircraft movement of more than 10,000 will be asked to submit the data. All domestic airlines will be required to file the details.
