Chennai: A Singapore-Chennai Jet Airways flight flew over cyclone Thane with ease, but had a tough time landing on the main runway of Chennai airport on Wednesday. The pilot had no other go but to brave strong crosswinds and land because the airport has only one runway.
The incident has led to airlines putting pressure on the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to open the second runway which has been extended across the Adyar river, at least for such emergency situations.
Runway works have been completed but AAI is waiting for the green signal from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). "We hope to get DGCA clearance by next month," said airport director E P Hareendranathan.
