CIAL cleaning staff on the warpath

Kochi: About a year after the Cochin International Airport Limited rapped its contractor agencies for violating the labour laws, about 600-odd employees in its house-keeping section are on a warpath against the company. According to V.P. George, a leader of CIAL Contract House Keeping Employees union in Nedumbassery, CIAL was not doing enough to ensure the salaries of employees and other benefits including the Employees Provident Fund, Group Insurance etc of its employees.
“The house-keeping employees are drawing a salary much below the minimum-wage standards and are not receiving any of the additional perks entitled to them,” he said. In addition, about 30 percent of the total payments are being paid to the contractor as penalty and other dues.
The union has already registered an official complaint with the authorities concerned, and is preparing to go for a strike soon to ensure the legal rights of its members, he said.
