Flight bar for pregnant women

Chennai: The incident of a woman scheduled to fly to Kuala Lumpur giving birth to a child at the airport and the child dying after two hours put the focus on the norms adopted by airlines with regard to pregnant passengers.
A woman can travel on board a flight up to 28 weeks of pregnancy and it is mandatory for her to carry a fitness certificate after completion of seven months.
“Each airlines has its own set of rules, but most of them don’t allow pregnant ladies who have completed seven months of gestation period to travel. Only in emergencies would airlines allow heavily pregnant women to travel and in these cases, she would be allowed to do so only after she produces a fitness certificate with the estimated due date,” said an airline official.
“The aircraft would be in a controlled state and pressurised environment and so there could be complications when a woman delivers on board,” the official said.
Flight attendants are only trained in basic emergency procedures and not on delivering a baby, he said.
