Govt inks MoU with AAI to develop Deoghar airport

Ranchi: Jharkhand Government on Thursday singed an MoU with Airport Authority of India for developing airport at Deoghar, a town of immense religious importance.
As per the agreement, the airport would be developed within two years time, after land acquisition is done. About Rs350 crore would be spent on the project in which Rs300 crore would be coming from the Centre as grants, whereas the rest would be given to AAI by the Jharkhand Government.
The venture would require additional 675 acres of land that would be acquired with the help of State Government. Work on rehabilitation of the displaced people, arrangement for water and electricity and expenditure incurred on shifting the infrastructure facilities would cost about Rs90 crore and State Government would bear the cost. The land would be given to AAI for a period of 30 years as long term lease for developing the airport.
The Deoghar airport has existing runway of 1158x24 metres. The agreement would pave way for developing it to 1700x30 metres in the first phase and later, depending on the viability, second phase of development would take place. This would take the airport up to 2700x45 metre length. ATR-72 planes can be operated in the preliminary phase.
