Airport row: Sugathakumari to launch Assembly march

Pathanamthitta: The People’s Joint Action Council, protesting against the proposed private airport project at Aranmula has decided to stage a march to the State Legislature on March 20.
This was announced at a press conference convened by the action council leaders, A.K.Muraleedhara Kurup, K.S.Suresh, R.Ajayakumar, Manoj Madhavasserry and Reji Kuzhikkala, on Saturday.
According to them, as many as 1000 people from Aranmula will set off to Thiruvananthapuram in 18 buses at 7 am on March 20 to take part in the Assembly march.
Renowned Malayalam poet, Sugathakumari, will inaugurate the march in Thiruvananthapuram, later, at 10 am. Leaders of various political parties will also address the march, they said.
The action council leaders said the march was to press the demand for withdrawal of the notification issued by the Industries Department declaring 500 acres of land in and around Aranmula as industrial area in the name of the airport project, and seeking stern action against the illegal conversion of paddy fields and wetlands in Aranmula.
The action council has called upon the Government not to support the proposed private airport project as it would require large-scale conversion of ecologically fragile wetlands and paddy fields.
