Attempts to ‘flush’ leopard out have failed

Despite best efforts of officers of the UT Wildlife Department, the elusive leopard that entered a pipe under the runway at the Chandigarh airport remains in hiding.
The elusive leopard that entered a pipe under the runway at the Chandigarh airport remains in hiding despite all attempts by Indian Air force personnel and the Chandigarh Forests and Wildlife Department to lure it into the open. The leopard was first glimpsed by IAF ground staff near the runway a week ago. Initially, the animal could not be identified with certainty. Santosh Kumar, Chandigarh Chief Wildlife Warden said that there had been no kills and no pug marks were seen. Only on Monday was the leopard seen clearly by Wildlife Department officers.
The leopard is still in the pipe and is afraid to come out. Wildlife Warden Santosh Kumar explained that they have closed one end of the pipe and they put a cage baited with a chicken in front of the remaining entrance. They also requisitioned the fire brigade and turned hoses into the pipe to literally flush the leopard out. However, as there are several connected pipes the water jets had no impact. Use of the tranquiliser gun has been ruled out for the time being for fear of killing the animal.
