Eurocopter sees chopper demand taking off in 3 years

Hyderabad: Eurocopter, a Franco-German-Spanish helicopter maker and a division of aerospace and defence leader EADS, sees the Indian helicopter sector growing significantly over the next three years, primarily due to the opening up of new areas of operations.
Eurocopter sees emergency medical services, law & order, utility, including freight and news-gathering, and search & rescue sectors boosting demand for its flying machines.
Right now, oil & gas and VIP movement segments use the majority of the non-military helicopters in the country.
“There are about 260 helicopters in India. By 2015, it is expected to reach 500. Most of the fresh demand is likely to come from the new areas including emergency medical services,” Xavier Hay, CEO of Eurocopter India, said.
Eurocopter India is targeting a 20% growth every year. “We are aiming to sell 20-25 helicopters in India every year,” he said.
Though associated with the Indian market for about 50 years now, Eurocopter had set up its subsidiary in India in June 2010. From a fleet of 41 in 2005, the number of Eurocopter helicopters in India stood at about 80 in 2011. It has about 360 helicopters in the military market.
