High-flying tycoons grounded by customs

Mumbai: In what turned out to be quite the 'millionaire's day' for the Mumbai Airport Customs officials, its Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted two business barons back-to-back, and recovered undisclosed items worth millions yesterday.
In the first case, business magnate Anshuman Ruia of Essar Group was found carrying accessories, including high-end purses and household items, beyond the permissible limit.
Ruia had landed in the city on the Jet Airways London-Mumbai flight 9W 117, and was clearing the green channel when the AIU officials intercepted him.
He was asked to pay fine and duty, which he deposited in the bank at the airport. The case was adjudicated and he was allowed to go," said a Customs official.
Minutes after Ruia was intercepted, the officials stopped US-based Indian millionaire Dilip Sontakke. He had landed from British Airways flight BA 139 with wife Jayshree and was in the green channel when he was diverted to the Customs special screening point.
"After checking him, we recovered a couple of diamond-studded high-end watches. His excuses raised our suspicion, and we decided to examine their entire baggage.
During a detailed examination of the luggage, we recovered another 14 items of diamond-studded watches and diamond jewellery, worth Rs 2 crore. The valuables were cleverly hidden in the clothes and toiletries. Not a single item was declared by the Sontakkes," said another official.
