Promotion board mooted to step up air cargo volumes

Hyderabad: The total air cargo volume handled by all Indian airports together could be just about touching the 2.75-million-tonne mark this fiscal. And this is less than what is handled by airports such as Hong Kong, Shanghai and Paris.
Also, the average weight load factor of air cargo in the last five years was about 62 per cent, mirroring significant unused capacity.
These indicate that a much higher growth rate can be achieved in this sector through improved infrastructure, higher operational efficiencies and simplified procedures, says a report by FICCI-KPMG released at the recent India Aviation 2012 here.
Projections made by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Civil Aviation and KPMG indicate the air cargo volumes could increase to 4.4 mt by 2016-17, including international cargo of 2.7 mt.
