AI to lease out space at Nariman Point building

Mumbai: Crisis-Ridden Air India (AI) has finally decided to lease out its surplus space in the landmark Air India building in Nariman Point.
This week, the national carrier called for expressions of interest from leading real estate consultants having pan-India presence for helping it in the leasing of their premises in the Nariman Point building as well as the Airlines House in Delhi. Just this Wednesday, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh had admitted in the Lok Sabha that as per the provisional estimates for the 2011-12 fiscal, AI is likely to incur a loss of Rs 7,853 crore.
“This is in keeping with our decision to monetise our assets both in India and abroad,” said AI spokesperson K Swaminathan. The airline has been mulling over its turnaround plan for a while now. The iconic 23-storey sea-facing building at Nariman Point has 2.20 lakh sq ft of space, most of which has been lying vacant for several years now.
