Chennai airport may soon get a travelator to connect terminals

Chennai: If things proceed as per the revised proposals of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Chennai airport will get a travelator to connect the new domestic terminal to the new international terminal and a multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility.
Both facilities were part of the original mega expansion project when it was launched, but in course of time, escalation of costs of certain components forced the authorities to jettison the important facilities.
With the project nearing completion, the AAI had sent a revised estimate for the expansion project to Public Investments Board (PIB) a few months ago.
A senior AAI official said that originally the AAI had estimated the expansion project cost to be Rs. 1,808 crore. But, with the increase in costs the AAI sent a revised proposal with a revised estimate of Rs. 2,015 crore to the PIB for its approval. This would provide an additional reserve of Rs. 207 crore, the officer said. “We feel that the PIB will soon approve the revised estimate sent by the AAI. With adequate funds, the AAI can possibly think of installing the travelator and the multi-level car parking facility,” the officer said.
