Man who came to see son off at airport dies

Chennai: A man who came to Chennai Airport to see off his son, who was to take a flight to the Gulf, died in a road accident on Thursday night. His son and other relatives were witness to the tragedy. Mathiazhagan was from Sembium village in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district. His son Manikandan (25), a tailor, had landed a good job in Qatar. On Thursday, Mathiazhagan, along with three other relatives and his son, boarded a State government bus in Kumbakonam, bound for Chennai. They reached Chennai Airport around 10.30 p.m. Manikandan was scheduled to board a flight to Doha at 3 a.m. on Friday. They then decided to have dinner. As there are no restaurants on the airport side of the road, they walked across Grand Southern Trunk Road to reach the other side. While the rest of his family managed to cross GST Road, Mathiazhagan was hit by a speeding car going towards Tambaram. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Chromepet, where he died on Friday morning.
