New Garia-airport metro link still awaiting AAI approval

Kolkata: No approval from Airports Authority of India (AAI) is delaying award of contract for the ambitious 32-km New Garia to Airport metro link in Kolkata. Proposed to be completed in 2015, this is the longest metro link in the city.
To be run by Metro Railway, Kolkata – an arm of Indian Railways – the Rs 3,951-crore project will connect Kolkata airport in the North to New Garia in the South. Kolkata currently has one metro line running. Two more lines – Airport-Howrah and Joka-BBD bag – are under construction.
According to a Metro Railway spokesperson, of the five legs of New Garia to Airport stretch, contracts were awarded for four legs covering an estimated 25 km. These contracts have been awarded to three infrastructure companies – Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, L&T and Gammon India. Contracts for the last 4 km of the line connecting airport is pending as AAI is yet to approve the plan.
