Threefold rise in number of tipsy pilots

New Delhi: Indian skies are getting dangerously full of tipsy pilots and cabin crew. The January-March quarter witnessed a threefold increase in number of crew members found drunk while reporting to airport for operating flights with 45 being caught this year as opposed to 15 last year. The number of pilots who failed the breath analyzer test rose from four to 14 and cabin crew number jumped from 11 to 31 in January-March this year over same quarter in 2011.
Aviation authorities have enacted new rules and stricter tests to curb the menace -- and serious safety risk -- of drunk crew members operating flights.
"Large scale breath tests were conducted during last Christmas and New Year festive period. No crew member was detected positive at that time. Then we decided to go in for a foolproof testing system which is leading to a spurt in number of people found drunk now," said sources.
