Thud! Welcome to Calcutta

Calcutta: Pilots of flights to and from the city routinely complain about the “undulating” surface of the twin runways on which around 140 aircraft land every day, sometimes hitting patches where the wear and tear is a safety hazard. The disconcerting view from the cockpit matches the discomfort of fliers, many of whom find landing in the city a scary experience.
“The main runway requires immediate resurfacing. We have pointed this out to the airport authorities several times,” Capt. Sarvesh Gupta, chairman of the Airlines Operators’ Committee, told Metro.
Not that there haven’t been any runway scares lately for the Airports Authority of India to need reminding about safety protocol.
