‘We do not chase market share'

Mr Giorgio De Roni, CEO, GoAir, was in town recently to announce the launch of the airlines' Chennai operations from May 1.
Mr Roni has earlier worked as strategy advisor for Aircraft Fleet Purchase Ltd in Ireland, and has also had a long stint with Italian airline, Air One.
Business Line met him to gather his views about the problems facing the Indian aviation industry and potential solutions such as allowing FDI and direct fuel import in the sector.
He also discussed GoAir's ‘sustainable business' strategy. Excerpts from the interview:
How was the year 2011-12 for the airlines industry in India?
The year 2011-12 has been very challenging for the airlines industry. Spike in fuel prices, weakening rupee, infrastructure bottlenecks were a drag on the industry.
However, in the current financial year we started to record significant improvement in terms of load factor. In our case, we have been doing significantly well since last winter.
