2 yrs after Mangalore air crash, victims’ kin await relief

Mumbai: Exactly two years after the air crash of Air India Express flight IX 812, the families of cabin crew who died in the tragedy are still awaiting the compensation which was promised to them by then aviation minister Praful Patel.
On May 22, 2010, an Air India Express flight from Dubai to Mangalore crashed while landing at Mangalore airport at 6.05am. There were 166 people on board the airplane which overshot the runway and crashed into the valley before bursting into flames. Only eight people survived the accident which claimed the lives of the rest 158.
Their families now claim that Air India is offering them a mere Rs35 lakh as compensation, instead of the earlier promised amount of Rs75 lakh. “We have received calls from Air India officials who offered us Rs35 lakh and asked us to sign the papers saying that the final settlement has been done. All the four families of the cabin crew have refused to take the money,” said Siddharth Survase, father of airhostess Sujata Survase who died in the crash.
