CPI sees 'hidden agenda' in decision on airport

Pathanamthitta: The recent decision of the United Democratic Front to give approval to the proposed private airport project at Aranmula, terming it “one which can lead to the overall development of the State,” was aimed at protecting violators of law, alleged Communist Party of India.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, CPI district secretary P. Prasad said that the UDF decision was taken with a hidden agenda to influence the ongoing study on the environmental implications of the proposed airport by the director of the Environment and Climate Change (ECC) department, P. Sreekantan Nair.
The UDF move would leave enough room for corruption and rampant conversion of paddy fields and wetlands, he alleged.
Mr. Prasad said the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had sought certain clarifications from the State government on the present status of the land identified for the airport project and also on its environmental implications.
