A Kargil hero who is ready to fly again

Ranchi: “Chill, it’s only minor bruises,” said the man to his wife from hospital with multiple injuries after a hard-land on Ranchi airport on Wednesday.
The man was co-pilot G.P.S. Kaushik, who along with his chief V.K. Singh, kept a cool head when chief minister Arjun Munda’s Agusta AW109 chopper developed technical snags mid-air. The duo has, since then, earned much praise from aviation experts for ensuring that the aircraft did not catch fire.
When Kaushik’s wife Kiran, in Lucknow with two teenaged daughters Vasundhara and Vasudha, saw the terrifying television footage, she was shocked.
“My mind went blank,” Kiran, now in Ranchi, told The Telegraph.
By around 8pm on Wednesday evening, she recalled, she got the call from Kaushik. “That’s when he said, ‘chill’. After all, he’s a Kargil war veteran. He hates fuss,” said the proud wife.
