Let the banks take majority ownership of Air India and sell the airline off

More than 400 pilots of Air India (AI) stayed away from work despite the Delhi High Court's order on Wednesday terming the strike illegal. Clearly , they count on the airline's public-sector character and guaranteed political interference to escape any lasting disciplinary action. This is simply unacceptable. The state-owned carrier was given a Rs 30,000 crore rescue package only last month.
It's flying on borrowed time and fraying public patience. Its staff clearly fails to appreciate this. The Indian Pilots' Guild, union for AI pilots flying international flights, is upset over promotions and does not want pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines to be trained to fly the long-haul Boeing Dreamliner, saying this would block their career progression. Such a demand is untenable after the merger of the two national carriers. So, the management cannot be blamed for sacking some pilots.
