Mohali airport gets Chandigarh surname to please Haryana

New Delhi: A controversy over the naming of a proposed international airport at Mohali, which led to a slugfest between Punjab and Haryana, could find a resolution following the Centre’s intervention.
Civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh has suggested that the upcoming airport be named Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali-Chandigarh, partly addressing concerns of both the states. While the Punjab government has been pushing hard to ensure the airport be named after the legendary freedom fighter from the state, it also wanted the location be identified as Mohali — a satellite city, adjoining Chandigarh that falls within the geographical boundaries of Punjab. The Haryana government, on the other hand, has resisted the location being put as Mohali and was insisting on it being identified as Chandigarh, since the latter is the joint capital of the neighbouring states.
