Pawan Hans helipads: Size shows they are for ‘biggest choppers’

The project report by Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (PHHL) makes no mention of commercial sorties by helicopters from the proposed Helicopter Training Academy and Heliport at the Gliding Centre, Pune (Hadapsar). But the work on ground zero seems to tell a different story. The cement structures — three helipads nearing completion — can facilitate take off and landing of an Mi-172, the heaviest of the passenger helicopters in the PHHL inventory.
Specifications for heliports are defined by Section 3.1.20 of the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR). “A safety area surrounding a Final approach and take-off area (FATO) intended to be used by helicopters operated in performance class 1...Each external side of the safety area shall be at least 2D where FATO is quadrilateral,” says the rule. The ‘D’ in the CAR is the diametre of circle the helicopter rotors make.
