Poor visibility grounds flights

Chandigarh: Poor visibility due to hazy weather conditions grounded all the flights from the Chandigarh airport on Thursday, leaving around 2,000 passengers high and dry. No flights from outside too could land in the city.
The visibility at the local airport was less than 600 metres, while instrument landing system (ILS), a navigation aid required for landing of aircraft in poor visibility also could not prove helpful. At present the ILS is CAT-I (category 1) and it can help the aircraft in landing if the visibility is around 1,200 metres or above. According to airport officials, the weather turned foggy unexpectedly on Thursday and dust particles in the air made the visibility between 600-700 metres, making it impossible for pilots to operate the aircraft.
