Air India assesses staff strength in all departments

New Delhi: There's more bad news for the 400-odd striking pilots of erstwhile Air India, especially for 300 of them who have not been sacked so far. Based on the Dharmadhikari committee recommendations, AI has started evaluating the staff strength in all its departments and the actual requirement there.
Being a government organization, the nearly 30,000-strong AI will not resort to layoffs in case a department is found to have more than required staff. But with 400 pilots on strike since May 7, 101 of whom have been sacked so far, AI is going to take back the remaining once they end their strike only if they are actually needed.
"Half of the 800 pilots of erstwhile AI are on strike and yet we are able to operate 80 per cent of the flights. This indicates a serious mismatch existed earlier with too many highly paid people doing too little," said a top aviation ministry source.
