Chandigarh airport: Cabinet nod to mutual exchange of land

Chandigarh: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal of the Ministry of Defence for mutual exchange of 2.50 acres of land between the UT Administration and Indian Air Force (IAF) for expansion of civil air terminal at Chandigarh Airport.
In order to expand the civil air terminal of Chandigarh Airport, the need was felt to have additional land transferred from defence area. Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs & Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal had taken up the matter with the ministries concerned and followed up this issue.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned to expand Chandigarh Airport in order to augment air services from Chandigarh airport. However, as AAI does not have land to provide to the IAF which is required for any transfer of defence land, the UT Administration undertook to transfer an equal portion of land in Sector 31 to the IAF. This mutual exchange was approved by the Cabinet.
The defence land is to be transferred to the UT Administration on a permanent basis in lieu of an equal portion of land being transferred to the IAF. The additional land will be used by the authority for expansion of facilities at Chandigarh Airport. The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal of the Ministry of Defence for mutual exchange of 2.50 acres of land between the UT Administration and Indian Air Force (IAF) for expansion of civil air terminal at Chandigarh Airport.
