Mumbai: To stop encroachments by people from the nearby Nehru Nagar slums, officials of the Juhu airport, also called the Juhu aerodrome, have asked the local police for help to patrol its borders. But the police have refused help as there is a shortage of staff.
The airport officials had recently cleared encroachments as they posed a security hazard. But the problems are far from over as the slum dwellers keep entering inside the periphery illegally and the authorities fear that they could encroach again.
“We have taken all the possible steps to keep the slum dwellers of Nehru Nagar from encroaching on the airport periphery. But it is not possible without help from the police. At least 25 police personnel are required to man the area 24x7,” said a senior official from the Juhu airport.
