Govt revives plan for full-body airport scanners

After shelving it last year, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has revived its proposal to instal full-body scanners at airports. An inter-disciplinary technical committee will look into all implications — from health to privacy — and will even survey passengers to know their views.
With representatives from Civil Aviation and Health ministries, Intelligence Bureau and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, this committee will meet in a month.
“There are several biological, health and privacy issues involved,” said Civil Aviation Secretary Naseem Zaidi. “All these aspects are being evaluated by the committee.”
Passengers will be given an option: either they go for a pat-down (intensive frisking) search or walk through the full-body scanner. At present, such scanners are installed in several airports in the US and Europe.
