IGI Airport to use all runways together

New Delhi: Delays due to runway congestion at the IGI Airport could soon be a thing of the past. To reduce the stress on the airport's main runway 28/10 during peak hours, all three runways will be operated simultaneously. Trials are expected to start on Wednesday.
Most airlines prefer to use the main runway as against the new runway 29/10, said airport sources. "The new runway is only beneficial for airlines using Terminal 3. All other airlines, including defense, general aviation, cargo and low-cost carriers that use Terminal 1 opt for the main runway. Consequently, when traffic peaks, low-cost carriers also have to be diverted to the new runway which means an additional taxiing time of over 20 minutes for them. Since they have to cross an active taxiway to reach their terminal, it takes them more time in case the runway is occupied," said airline sources.
Airport officials said that simultaneous use of runways would be applicable only for a few hours during the day when traffic is most dense.
