Kochi airport becomes new control centre for regional air traffic

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is trying out the Lower Area Control Centre Kochi — a new facility to man airspace below 24,500 feet — as part of restructuring, monitoring and control of Indian airspace.
The AAI is updating its air traffic control facilities at 36 airports. Kochi, being the busiest airport in South India after Chennai and Bangalore, has emerged as a new area control centre in the new exercise. The plan aims to provide more efficient control systems to reduce flying time for aircraft landing and taking off from Nedumbassery international airport as well as those using the naval air space. Air traffic controllers are engaged in providing smooth, safe and orderly flow of air traffic and contribute to the profitability of the aviation industry. The introduction of a new air traffic control unit at Nedumbassery will enable controllers to handle traffic in this area more efficiently as the major flow of aircraft is towards Kochi and then to Kozhikode and Coimbatore.
