Mopa may spell doom for Dabolim

Panjim: In the run up to Cortalim by-election, while Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar went out of his way to portray that the government would not shut down Dabolim airport even after Mopa Airport eventually becomes operative, erstwhile Digambar Kamat government too indicated that Dabolim would not be shut down. The truth is neither of the governments was “serious” when they claimed that Dabolim airport would not be shut down, mainly because in the absence of any comprehensive strategy for operationalising of dual airports system it is inevitable Dabolim will have to be shut-down sooner or later.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) that studied the feasibility of simultaneous operations at Dabolim and Mopa Airports at the behest of government of Goa in 2007, in its report, expressed the need for a “comprehensive strategy” to be put in place for operation of dual airports system.
Our sources in the government confirmed that no such comprehensive strategy has been developed till date.
