Passenger air traffic dips for the first time since June 2009 apan

Chennai: Air passenger traffic in India grew by a modest 2.2% in March 2012 to touch131.9 lakh passengers. This was the worst performance since June 2009 and the deceleration was on account of sharp hike in air fares and withdrawal of some carriers from certain non-profitable routes.
"Most carriers have been hiking their fares steeply since mid February 2012 due to a sharp curtailment in Kingfisher Airlines' flights schedule, soaring jet fuel prices and anticipation of a sharp increase in user development fees in certain airports, especially Delhi and Mumbai," says the CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Economic Intelligence Service.
