Wait prolongs for new aviation cop

New Delhi: The civil aviation authority (CAA), which will replace the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will take at least another three months to start functioning, top officials said.
“We are in the last stages of finalising a few recommendations regarding the financial model of the CAA. The new regulatory body will be a no-profit, no-loss body with financial autonomy. We are drawing an estimate of its annual expenses and accordingly will moot a financial model,” a senior civil aviation ministry official said.
According to the ministry, the CAA will go on a massive recruitment drive once it is set up. “The new organisation will have the power to directly recruit people and it will do it on a massive scale. There is a shortage of manpower at the DGCA and after the CAA comes into existence it will be the first issue that will be looked into,” the official said.
Unlike the DGCA, the board of the Union Public Service Commission will have no role to play in the CAA recruitments. The new regulator will have the power to demand financial documents and balance sheets from airlines.
