Thiruvananthapuram: The Air India Express (AIE) corporate office was inaugurated in Kochi a year ago with high hopes, but its fate hangs in balance now.
The chief operating officer — one of the few senior officials who shifted to the Kochi office from Mumbai -—is taking voluntary retirement, and much of the airline’s activities are still centered in Mumbai. COO, S.Chandrakumar, said he would exit this month for personal reasons. “The corporate headquarters is in Kochi only on paper; and for all practical purposes, it is in Mumbai,” an AIE official said. “If the new COO opts to sit in Mumbai, it won’t take much time to close down the Kochi corporate office,” he said. The decision to shift the headquarters from Mumbai to Kochi had been taken as about 70 per cent of the AIE services are in the Kerala-Gulf sector.
