Air force flies into private zone

New Delhi: The defence ministry today opened the aircraft-manufacturing sector for private industry, permitting the Indian Air Force to select a cargo plane that would be built by a joint venture between an Indian company and a foreign vendor.
Defence minister A.K. Antony accepted a proposal piloted by Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne on the recommendation of key industry associations.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Assocham and Ficci had made representations to the government, saying the Indian corporate sector was keen to make aircraft but was not getting enough backing.
