Civil aviation ministry vents ire as Air India Pilots give letters on rejoining, but fail to show up

New Delhi: Just two days after the 424 agitating pilots at national carrier Air India called off their 58-day-long strike by submitting affidavits indicating willingness to resume duties, the civil aviation ministry has toughened its stance stating that a mere letter expressing a desire to rejoin is not in the spirit of the Delhi High Court order.
"They should have shown up physically at their respective bases/departments instead of submitting 400 affidavits. It is a defiance and a mockery of the court order," a senior official from the ministry said, who did not want to be identified.
The pilots, however, think otherwise. "If they have such an objection, they should have raised it in the court. We are doing everything in consultation and approval of Justice Khetrapal. Moreover, we have submitted a copy of the letter to Air India is well. This could be discussed tomorrow (Friday)," said Tauseef Mukaddam, spokesperson, Indian pilots Guild, the union that struck work at Air India on May 7 demanding exclusive rights to fly the Boeing 787 aircraft.
