Mumbai: A Mumbai-bound aircraft with 99 passengers on board was struck by lightning on Tuesday evening that led to complete communication failure in mid-air and forced the pilot to make an emergency landing. The flight landed safely after the pilot sent a distress signal to air traffic control (ATC) and the airport officials cleared the runway.
The incident occurred at 6.30pm when the Rajkot-Mumbai JetKonnect flight S2 4080 was about 15 minutes away from landing in Mumbai. Airport officials said the aircraft was 40 miles away, at an altitude of 12,000 feet. For the past couple of days, Mumbai has been witnessing inclement weather as the monsoon has picked up over the region.
