Medical tests for 'sick' Air India pilots could take long

Mumbai: Since the Air India pilots have been absent from work for over two months now, they will not be able to restart their flying duties anytime soon even though they have officially called off their agitation.
One of the hurdles is the medical test, a mandatory requirement for pilots who have reported "sick" for more than 15 consecutive days. These tests are carried out in the medical centres approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Even on a normal day getting an appointment for undergoing a Class I medical exam is not easy. India has over 5000 Commercial Pilot License (CPL) holders and since every pilot should undergo a Class I medical exam either annually or once every six months, depending on his/her age, the queue to keep the medical certificate valid is quite a long one.
