Mumbai-Delhi flights to take direct route

Mumbai: Flights from Mumbai to Delhi will take a direct route from July 26. To improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon footprint, Airports Authority of India (AAI) will open a direct route between the two cities. Hence, instead of taking a roundabout route through Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Udaipur, a flight from Mumbai to Delhi will now take a straight path, which will save them some time and burn less fuel. Every flight is likely to save 1,000 kg (1 tonne) of carbon emissions. Ahmedabad-Delhi, Baroda-Delhi, Udaipur-Delhi are some other sectors which will have a straight route.
Mumbai airport officials said flights operate on a ground-based navigation system which does not allow them to follow a direct path and instead take a route via other cities. But now a satellite-based navigation system, RNAV5, will be used to allow a straight path to certain flights.
