New Chennai airport terminal stuck in red tape

Chennai: The swanky steel and glass domestic terminal at the Chennai airport has been more or less ready for three months but the Airports Authority of India is yet to decide when to throw it open for passengers.
After airlines refused to move to the new terminal before amenities like restaurants, lounges and in-line baggage scanning system were introduced, AAI decided to float tenders to give commercial contracts. However, the move is stuck because the civil aviation ministry is yet to take a call on who should run the new terminals — AAI or the private consortiums that own the Delhi and Mumbai airports. The AAI Act has been amended in a way that the ministry can lease out an airport or a part of it to private companies.
