Repeated snubs to minister led to DGCA's removal

New Delhi: The civil aviation minister Ajit Singh has faulted a key cabinet committee and the cabinet secretary for ignoring his request not to grant an extension to Bharat Bhushan, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Singh criticised the extension in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on July 9, saying that he has repeatedly requested the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, (ACC), to send the proposal for extending Bhushan's tenure back to him for approval.
ET has seen and reviewed the copy of the letter. Bhushan, whose term was extended last week, was removed as DGCA by Ajit Singh on Tuesday, sparking speculation that it was done to forestall action against Kingfisher Airlines, run by Vijay Mallya.
The revelation that Ajit Singh had lobbied against Bhushan's extension complicates the matter further and throws unwelcome spotlight on relationships between senior bureaucrats within the aviation ministry.
